about

Hey! Hey! The blues is alright! Thank you music lovers for picking up Volume 6 of Blues With a Rhythm. Wherever you are on this planet remember this music bleeds life from the African American experience. Remember the names of these artists. Hold hands with the blues, and share this singular musical form of expression.

Hey Miss Fancy!

Larry Darnel started singing in church. He later danced with a burlesque road show, and he had a number one hit on the R&B charts. He also appeared in the film, “Harlem rock and roll revue” in 1955. “Ramblin’ man” kicks off our volume 6.

Tarheel Slim and Little Ann are billed as the Lovers with “Security” on Chicago’s Checker records.

Another female/male combo here with “You said it and don’t forget it” by Johnnie Louise Richardson and Joe Rivers. These singers hail from Alabama and South Carolina respectively. This side was leased to Chess from J and S records. All Johnnie and Joe’s original masters were destroyed with countless others in the Universal fire in 2008. This is as close as we can get to the original sound of these artists.

This 1964 side by a fantastic female/male combo was released on Betty records by Jim and Monica. Both singers were in other notable acts of the era including the Fireballs. Here they give us their version of Little Richard’s “Slippin’ and Slidin’.”

Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers feature the vocal stylings of a very young Otis Redding. “Pinetop” on TIFCO is here as an instrumental, with Jenkins signature jangly guitar sound..

Next up Barbara Greene, another wonderful blues singer of the era, sends us with her joyful rocking version of “Long tall Sally” on ATCO.

Women are so important to this genre. We have another fantastic female fronted side from Chicago Blues singer Louise Brown. “Son in law,” is an answer song to Ernie K. Does, “Mother in law.” This record, on Chicago’s very obscure WITCH label, was recorded by entrepreneur and music lover Bill Ermine. Bill recorded all of his artists off hours at the Diamond Coal Company on Chicago’s North Side.

Chicago is again the place to be with a side by the very hip Harold Burrage. Burrage’s backing band included the likes of Otis Rush, Willie Dixon, Wayne Bennett, and Jody Williams. Well Alright! Burrage was a co-writer of “Hi-Yo Silver” with the fabulous Claude Trenier. Here he is with “She knocks me out,” originally released on one of the greatest small labels of all time, Chicago’s Cobra records.

The Premiers knock on the door with this tough rocker and title track for our compilation, “Hey Miss Fancy!” from 1957. Billed on the 45 record as The Premiers with Sonny. Who is Sonny exactly? Due to the major label reach of this record, it may be a performer with a contract for another label. Test your ear and let us know who you think it is!

We round out our series with Roscoe Shelton of the Skylarks fame with “Is it too late babe?” Released on Excello, I can only hope this wistful number is right on time.

Thank you, music lovers for joining us on this Blues with a Rhythm and all of you who have got the blues, you are never alone! Thank you to our producers and Farewell records for again giving these artists the ability to shout!
