about

Blues with a rhythm Volume 4

I had the great honor to call Dave “Bubba” Mitchell a friend. More than that, I had the privilege to watch a master saxophone player and entertainer night after night alongside one of America's greatest musical artists, Milt Trenier. “Bubba” was a killer with his early band, Dave Mitchell and the Flames. He was also a member of the Lionel Hampton band AND the Cab Calloway Orchestra. “Bubba” was the most talented, groovy and sexy sax player. He was also one of the wildest and funniest people I have ever seen on stage. The late night glitterati of the heyday of Chicago’s lounge scene can attest. “Bubba” was a consummate artist, interpreter of song, and he was from the era when entertaining an audience was taken to an extraordinary level, and meant something in the business of music. He always shouted to us from the bandstand, “Hey! Hey! The blues is alright!” I dedicate this volume to his memory.

Mr. personality Lloyd Price pushes us out onto the dance floor with a couple of great sides from his pioneering black owned record label KRC. Price’s records are historically significant as they are some of the first to break down barriers between black and white audiences. Here we have two sides, “Chicken and the bop,” and “Such a mess.” with sax by the great Mel Dalton. Lloyd just passed away in May of 2021.

The Billy Lamont side, “Come on right now” was cut in a one-day session for King records with members of Little Richard’s “Upsetters” band in 1960.

“You’d better be sure” by Rickey Allen was a local hit in Chicago. Allen is a pioneer in creating the beloved northern soul sound.

Joe Mayfield penned this Excello records side, released on Rocket records. Joe recorded so few records some of his b-side cuts are from other artists. This side has the unmistakable Lazy Lester on harp and was recorded in Crawley, Louisiana in 1959.

“Then you’ll know” by Big “C” and the Galaxies kicks off the b side of our compilation. There is some doubt as to who Big “C” actually is...most likely Charles Kahill.

How would you like to be the opening act for Bobby “Blue” Bland? I cannot imagine a better gig in the world. Al “TNT Braggs started as a member of the 5 Notes, and toured with “Blue” Bland for years. Here he gives us “You’re something else” on Cock records.

Bob Mackey raises the Tempo with this 1962 side on R records. “Shonuff Ms. Brown.”

Now let’s do the “Hoochie Coochi Coo” with the Fames on Merri records featuring Scotty Todd.

Our volume rounds out with “Hey Hey Hey” by Dave “Baby” Cortez. Cortez is best known for having the first instrumental to hit number one on Billboard's hot 100. He sang doo-wops with the Pearls and the Valentines. This one is a groover.

Thank you to our producers for giving the incredible voices the ability to shout! We give you these recordings in their rare original 45 rpm glory mastered to Lp format.

Hey! Hey! The blues are Alright!
